Understanding Disability -- A Seminar plus Hands-on Workshop
Sunday, February 26, 1-4pm; PDP program grad credit offered through Madonna University; please inquire
$65 if pre-registering 1 week prior, or $75 afterward (supplies included)
There are many disabilities affecting the physical, cognitive, and emotional abilities of many individuals. To grasp an understanding of them can be difficult. In this three-hour workshop we’ll discuss disability in reference to how it’s defined, and then discuss it in reference to what possible avenues it can open up. For an educator, this can be beneficial for approaching your students from a more compassionate viewpoint. For those interested in disability, you’ll receive a perception-shift about disability. Shaqe will share about her research and upcoming book. She will talk about the significance of Universal Design for learning, how art can be a significant tool, what issues are behind creating an inclusive society, and the need to break down the barrier that disability is a limitation. Please send questions prior to the workshop, so that the workshop can be targeted to your needs. Shaqe has spoken on Inclusion for VSA arts, an organization that empowers people with disabilities. She is an advocate for breaking down barriers of disability (see her “Downtown Foot Art” project on the gallery website, for example).
Shaqe is currently collecting data about individuals with different disabilities. A lot of information regarding the definition of disability usually defines it in a negative light. Shaqe’s research will actually show a different perception of how disability will be perceived in the future. The research will show how society and culture can be transformed by individuals who have encountered disability, the significant strengths attained from acquisition of a disability, and what role it will have on the individual and society.
