The one-on-one apprenticeship private lesson can really advance your child to another level. Working with a professional artist who also is an educator can meet the individual needs of your child. The group sessions offered at Art & ideas are great in getting exposure to so many art forms and approaches, while developing a community with peers. However, in a private session, the child blossoms because of the one-on-one approach that is targeted on bringing out their individual gifts.
In the first session we develop an Individual Art Plan, or IAP. You and your child and I will discuss what would be the best plan of action and direction in the private sessions. One of the gifts that Shaqe has is seeing a child’s gifts and bringing them out and then building on them. By defining a direction, we target the lessons so that there is a maximum benefit for the child.
The art materials used in the private lessons are of a higher quality. For instance the child can be introduced to oil painting on canvas. Another medium used could be printmaking with linocut, and silkscreen. In the one-on-ones, techniques are taught and explored. The child is also coached throughout the lesson so that a hands-on approach coincides with cognitive learning throughout the lesson.
For example, Claire is now in the apprenticeship program. She was introduced to oil painting and portraiture in the private lessons. She enjoyed the buttery quality of the oil paint and wants to continue her journey in painting with oils.
One of the strengths of Claire is her ability to be representational but also her ability to think divergently. You can see this in the above photo of her assemblage sculpture made with popsickle sticks, and her watercolor which shows variations of shapes. My goal is to have her continue these developments and see how they merge as she progresses.
Each child is different and unique. In this one-on-one partnership their talents are manifested and developed.
